Alessandro Twombly directs flowers, rivulets and the cosmos into the force that drives them and at the same time undoes them, a tension-torsion that wraps itself between the surface of his canvas and the natural world, between dark and light, between chill and euphoria, between passion and compassion. The subtle enchantment of this artist’s painting is all captured here, in the mystery of a flower that blossoms in every single thing, a flower that is not just the bud of a plant that has burst into bloom any more and that is not contained in any bouquet, just as Stéphane Mallarmé conceived of it: “I say a flower, and all the outlines of flowers are cast into oblivion by my voice, and there rises the musical form, something different from every known form of flower, the flower as a fragrant idea, the one that is absent from every bouquet”.
